Do comets, or any other fish for that matter, care if the tank light is
left on all the time???

they get very stressed. I did it by accident over a four day holiday and
came back to a tank full of very stressed fish, noc- and diurnal. They
need the dark/light cycle.

you'll also get algae.

you can buy very cheap timers indeed.

Agreed. They need a day night cycle just like they get in nature.
