Using Potassium Permanganate

Hi fishfriends,

I'm still having problems with finrot and mouth fungus, although it hasn't
got any worse over the last 5 days. I've been treating the tank and giving
the fish salt dips, but the problem just doesn't seem to clear up. I dipped
the fish in Potassium Permanganate two days ago, and am going to do it again
today. I was wondering if I can apply the PP directly to the area that's
rotting, and whether it can be applied directly to the mouth. Please advise
me and let me know what strength the solution should be if it can be used
directly.

You can treat larger fish (big enough to handle) with PP on a q-tip. I
don't know what the concentration is supposed to be, but I think you
can get the information from koivet.com. They advocate and sell
potassium permangante. If all your fish have these problems, you
might just want to dose the whole tank, to make sure whatever bacteria
are contained therein, are killed. I believe kiovet has instructions
on doing this and/or links to help. (koivet.com and pondrx.com link
to each other for treatments and sales).

Thanks for the info, ludovica, I'll look into that if the problem erupts
again. Unfortunately my remaining 2 fish died yesterday, and I find myself
in a position of not knowing what to do now. I've never had an empty tank
for 7 years. Do I have to empty the tank and sterilise everything before I
restock, or can I just do some major water changes over the next few weeks
then add new fish? I might pose this as a new question, as people won't
expect to see it here!

Deb, you might consider posting this to rec.aquaria.freshwater.misc, maybe
even with a "PING Elaine T" in the subject. She knows a lot about the
chemical and the various diseases you described.
