View Full Version : Where to find iodine suplement?
Hi,
I just found out that my local LFS has ghost shrimps and Newts.
They are cute the newts. :)
Anyway I am interested in the shrimp. I always wanted to have some kind
of "lobster" in my tank. :)
Crayfish are too agressive so the other choice would be these shrimp.
I did some research and they seem to need iodine in the long run.
My lfs in the area do not carry what is mentioned alot kent Marine
Iodine or any other brand with Iodine on it that I could find. So I am
turning to something else that could provide iodine to them because I
really want to get those shrimp.
So besides pure iodine what can I put in the tank to suplement?
I even looked at the food but none mentions iodine in their ingredients
list. I wonder if foos with shrimp in it would provide that like dried
brine shrimp or something?

Food for shrimp/crabs usually has plenty of iodine. However, I'm very
surprised your lfs does not carry a supplement. You can easily get it at
one of the chain stores or online. I like these two stores:

It is refreshing to me to see a newbie (modestly I am not if any bit
further ahead though) such as yourself thrive in this hobby. I predict
ghost shrimp will make a great addition to your setup. I can't
recommend anything already recommended such as getting the supplement
shipped to you from that pet place or big als, etc.. but I encourage
you to try the ghost shrimp as I have read positive things about them
here. Newts are cool - I love fire newts. I had some once for 7 years
and only had to get rid of them eventually because I didn't trust
myself at the time to be able to take proper care of them so I gave
them to a pet shop and they might very well be happy to this very day
because I read in an encyclopedia a long time ago that newts can live
up to 60 years real time, if disease doesn't get them first. Good luck
and later!
Thanks for the reply... I am not too keen on buyinf this type of stuff
online because of shipping costs. :(
Anyway I have some wardley shrimp pellets and the main component is
shrimp meal.
would this provide some Iodine?
Thanks for the comments.
As for the newts, yeah they are cool "fish". Altough from what I read
they are agressive and want brackish waters. Is this correct?
At this time besides the shrimp I don't plan on adding more fish. I am
more pleased with the live plants. They do add a new dimension to a
tank and it is much more pleasant to look after than just fish.
With the addiction of a pleco, an apple snail two crabs and two
corycats my tank seems much more alive than it does with the gourami or
tetras and guppies. It just seems busier. :)

That's cool. My newts were living is standard freshwater (maybe a
little
acidic but natural for this area). I'd say they are aggressive but
never
noticed them eating any of the mosquito fish I had in their tank back
then
excpet I think they ate the bodies of any that died from something else
as I
observed (my hesitation is that the fish was at the surface upside down
and
I saw one of the newts approach it and eat it). I used water that had
been
sitting around for a week but because of my ignorance I think I capped
the
jug of water so I think the chlorine was still in it which didn't seem
to
bother the newts but I think those mosquito fish weren't able to
withstand
that water long enough to subsist in it. I had mosquito fish for 3 or 4
years in there though and when I think back on it they probably
actually
died from old age and as a group did not subsist because the chlorine
was
enough to either kill off any offspring or offspring could not be
created
because of that chemical in the water. That was a long time ago but it
was
great - a wonderful accomplishment despite my regrets later after
thinking
back on it. Good luck, later!
