I have a comet which chases another gold fish in the tank. What the
hell, I thought that goldfish are non agressive. Now I have taken the
aggressor fish out because if I leave him in, he will continue to
chase, bite and ultimately kill the other fish.

Do others face this problem? In the fish tank in the pet store they are
all so peaceful. Why do they start behaving like this in my pond.

Is there a way I can know if a set of goldfish will live peacefully
before buying?

Thanks,
Prat

Usually when goldfish start chasing it's because it's breeding time not
because they are being aggressive. You most likely have a male who is
chasing a female. Is the comet a fairly large fish or is it still
small? Also, what type of fish is he chasing? If you have fancy
goldies with a common or comet you will most likely have problems. I
know I have tried it and it was a complete failure.

Yes, I agree. That's what both literature (non-internet) and the pet
store person told me. If you look closely, there is likely no fin
damage.

(My two sarassa/shubunkin goldfish are basically like dogs, with one
sniffing the others' ass. And we all know what dogs are up to :)

I wonder, too, if they are going into the mating behavior because of
summer coming. At least where I live (Victoria, BC, Canada), the
weather outside is warming and our condo is getting warmer, and that
has coincided with my fish acting like this.

Thanks.
I too was hoping it was just mating. But yesterday the fish that was
chased died. I suspect it was due to the stress of the bully bothering
him.

The bully is a small ( just a tad above 1 inch) comet and the victim
was a common shubunkin ( the one with a single tail ). It was slightly
smaller than the bully.
Does mating occurs across sub breeds of goldfish like the comet and
shubunkin or comets always chase others.

Prat

Yes, they are all the same breed, just different variations.
Like dogs really - they will all breed!
