View Full Version : Goldfish Food Receipes
I have been experimenting with my Oranda's different foods to make
digestion easier. It seems that when the digestion tract gets too
challenged that "swim-bladder" can settle in. I think food plays a big
part with one of my Orandas...he struggles with solid food (gas and
constipation-floating) but with frozen blood worms he acts like nothing
is wrong and swims normal.
Any ideas???
Thanks

I have a chocolate oranda who does the same thing. When I feed blood
worms there appears to be no problem but with pellets or flakes it
still causes some floating. I have had success with feeding orange
slices, succhini, and home made gel food. Mazuri brand is one of the
gel foods I use (I actually feed it too all my fish) Its the aquatic
gel diet 5M70 http://www.mazuri.com/

Well, on the advice of someone here. I took my betta off of all pelleted
and flake foods and put him on only FD "whole" foods, (dried bloodworms,
brine shrimp and tubifex worms) and plan to try him on live brine shrimp
as soon as I set up a hatching jar... I also plan to try him on some
fresh frozen as soon as I can get back to the LFS.
While he never did have swim bladder issues, he DID get bloating and
constipation.
Maybe a variety of "real" foods instead of formulas is a better option
for healthy goldfish???
Do they need vegetable foods?

I give peeled frozen peas....sliced up along with the frozen blood
worms and everything tends to work better. I tried frozen brine shrimp
tonight with a little gas...not bad. I think after reading vegetable
foods are good to give a balance diet.

Here are some recipes you might like to try!
Gelatin Food For Fry And Adults
1 bottle each, strained baby food, egg yolk, mixed vegetables and chicken
2 small packages Knox unflavoured gelatin dissolved in ½ cup cold water
Cold water, enough to bring total ingredients up to 2 cups.
Over a medium heat, bring to a light boil. Boil for 1 minute, stirring
constantly (alternatively use a microwave oven and stir twice during the
boiling period).
Pour into a container and cool in the fridge overnight.
Cut into serving sizes and freeze all but a two day supply which needs to be
refrigerated.
Yields 2 cups of leathery goldfish food. ( For adults you may want to
increase the gelatine to 3 packets for a firmer product).
Goldfish Pancakes
2 bottles each strained baby food: chicken and mixed vegetables
4 egg yolks
1 cup white flour
¼ cup whole wheat flour
1 cup milk
1 tablespoon sugar
2 teaspoons baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
Mix all ingredients together very well.
Fry using as little cooking oil in the pan as possible (use Teflon pans to
avoid using cooking oils)
Make fairly large pancakes and pull them apart into different feeding sizes
for your goldfish.
Refrigerate of freeze pancakes to maintain freshness.
Basic Goldfish Cake
4 tablespoons spirulina algae (optional)
2 tablespoons sugar
1 ¾ cups white flour
½ cup cornmeal
½ cup wholewheat flour
4 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
3 ½ cups liquid (1 cup pureed meat-baby food or chicken, turkey, fish, 1 cup
pureed vegetables-spinach, swiss chard, squash, carrots etc., 1 cup beaten
eggs, ½ cup milk).
Mix all dry ingredients thoroughly. Add liquid and mix well (you may need to
add a little extra liquid).
Pour this very thick batter into two greased bread pans ( I think they mean
cake tins) about ½ full.
Bake at 350 degrees for 40 to 60 minutes or until a knife inserted into the
centre comes out clean.

Goldfish _love_ algae, and it's very good for them. One of mine, a
fantail, always got very floaty after eating dry foods, especially
pellets. Since there's enough green hair algae on the bogwood for them
to eat, he's been completely better (although they do now produce vast
quantities of dark green faeces. can't win 'em all)
