View Full Version : gold nugget pleco
i saw a wonderful looking gold nugget pleco at the lfs down the street.
and i went home and thought about it and decided i would buy it the next
day. so i did research and it says they are slow growers and need a
little protein. but i look at 4different sites and half said they need
wood the other half said they didnt. so do they need wood? the websites
also said that they are sensitive to water conditions? also what size do
they max out at? ive read 8 and 11 and 12? the gold nuggets at the lfs
are fat and about 4-5inches. so i would like to know if its a good idea
to get one for my 55 or stick with my common with my 2inch oscar
aquatech330(2) and xp3 temp at 81(ich treatment going back down). thanks
for all the feedback!!

http://www.planetcatfish.com/ would give you more data. In the world of
plecos, identification can be a challenge, and then much of the data
tends to be anecdotal rather than rigorously obtained through scientific
means. The rapid rate of new discoveries is causing many assumptions to
be made based on catch origin and similarities. There are 3 fish which
use that name, check out L018-L085, L081 and L177 on the site I listed
above. Here is a good summary :
http://www.planetcatfish.com/cotm/2000_12.php
Generally speaking, keep one per tank, provide plenty of shelter, supply
good water turbulence to the bottom of the tank, feed a varied diet
(including sinking foods which can escape your Oscar's attention and fall
between rockwork for the pleco to graze on), and have a variety of
driftwood types (not all wood is the same, and I believe that they do
this to clear their digestive tract, so I don't know how dependant this
is on their dietary preferences). hth
ps: these fish are real sweethearts, an Oscar might not make the best
tank-mate, ymmv.

I bought one of these for my son for his 30 gall. I had reservations about
the eventual size....the answer I got was if he grows too big they will take
him back "but I've never had one brought back yet"....
The one we have is very cute :-)
