View Full Version : Any fish that goes with goldfish in a non heated aquarium

I have a non heated tank since I was planning to keep only gold fish.
Just out of curiosity can I keep any other type of fish there at all
without the fish dying due to infighting? Or is it completely ruled
out?

Thanks,
Prat

Someone is bound to shoot me down for this one, but I've kept other fish
with my goldfish and had no problems. I had a couple yoyo loaches and tiger
barbs in my goldfish tank for a little while. They did just fine. Loaches
are generally hiders, and not aggressive, so there was no problems with fish
chasing or fighting or fin nipping... Same with the barbs. No problems at
all. I also had little albino cory in with my goldfish for quite some time
(probably a good 4 or 5 months) and he did just fine as well. I eventually
moved it out into a different tank with other tropicals when I set the tank
up, but he seemed just fine and dandy with the goldfish.
I've also had a pleco in with my goldfish forever. He started out real
small (about an inch from nose to tip of his fin) and now he's around 3-3.5"
in size and happily kissing the glass to keep it clean and nice. He's been
in there all along with no problems.
I'm guilty of tossing in other fish with my goldfish, and flame away if need
be, but I've never had a problem with non aggressive tropicals, anyways.
Just my 2¢.

I'll agree that WCM do fine, but plecs should be out of the question. They will
develop a taste for goldfish's slimecoats.

I have small catfish in with goldfish.
My tank is heated but catfish could probably survive w/o heat.

I have my GF in my tropical tank. It started out as an emergency measure,
but it's been 6 months and everybody is doing fine.

If this is so, then what do I need to look for?
I've had my pleco in the goldfish tank for longer than I can remember. He
stays to himself, and the goldfish as well stay away from him. All he
really does is stick to the glass or the large rocks and often hides for
days and days at a time.
I've never once had a problem with it in with goldfish.

I've heard that if the pleco is properly fed it will never hurt your GF. I
have also heard that it is not uncommon to suddenly find a big sucker mark
on the side of your GF if there is a pleco in the tank.

So there ya go - it depends on who you ask, I think.

Hm. Thanks.
He must be fed just fine, then. I've never had a problem with it, and never
once have I noticed a sucker mark. A pleco this size would DEFINITELY do
some damage, though, and it's not small enough that it could be missed.
Thanks!

FWIW, the people who proffered the "properly fed" theory are pretty well
respected in the Usenet world of fish care. I think they suggested algae
wafers.

A dojo or weather loach will do just fine with goldfish in an unheated
tank.....plecos will as well if the tank temp does not drop into the
mid to lower 60's.....
