View Full Version : water conditioning question

May 3rd 05, 08:50 PM
I have a 55 gallon aquarium. Lets say that every week I remove 10
gallons of water from the aquarium during cleaning & maintenance. Due
to evaporation i have to put a total of twelve gallons of water into
the aquarium to get it completely filled (two gallons evaporated over
the week plus the ten removed during the cleaning).

When I treat the water to go back into the tank, should I add enough
treatment (to remove chlorine & chloramine)for only the ten gallons
manually removed or for the full twelve gallons being added back into
the tank?

I guess the real question is "when water evaporates from the aquarium,
does it leave behind the water conditioners that were previously added,
or does the conditioner get used up in the process of conditioning?" I
am using Aqua Plus Water Conditioner from Hagen just in case this
matters to anyone.

If this needs clarification please let me know.

Any comments are appreciated. TIA.

I always condition whatever volume I am replacing. It is the replacement
water that can have the chlorine, chloramine and heavy metals that need
treating...not the hopefully pre-treated water in the tank...

Yup, I think excess water conditioning chemicals would NOT remain in any
significant quantity after a week. Treat according to the new volume of
water being added.

If you use carbon, they're gone for sure.
