View Full Version : Firefish gone AWOL - buddy now alone

We bought a couple of firefish two weeks ago as the advice seemed to be that
they were better in pairs. One of them has disappeared - we have not seen it
for 3-4 days now. Some sources say they are prone to jumping our of the
tank. There was no sign of on the floor, but we do have 4 cats so it
probably would have ended up as a snack if it did leap.
Question is, will the other firefish be ok by itself?

Firefish do well as mated pairs, not pairs in general. If they weren't a
compatible pair, one probably got harassed and died or jumped ship.

Given the choice between a single and a pair, you'd be best off with a
single every time. I took a chance and got a couple that looked like a
pair... Nope. Two males, and they had a rather strong difference of
opinion after a few months. Rather than undergo the impossible task of
tearing apart the tank to try and remove one, I got a third one to see
if it might improve things... It definitely did - I now have a
"school" of magnifica, though I think I've been more fortunate than
anything.
