View Full Version : Red Sea Prism Skimmer noise

Hi ... I bought a Prism skimmer a few weeks ago for my
20g microreef in the office. I was limited to this
choice due to money (well, lack of it) and tank size
(it's the right height for a 20g long tank sitting on
a desk).
The noise is driving me nuts! I just called Red Sea, and
they informed me there was nothing they could do about it
since the noise is created when the impeller chops up the
water/air mix.
I didn't know whether to be amused or annoyed by their
response. They really should put a warning notice on the
packaging:
"Warning: this product can be annoyingly noisy"
Has anyone out there been able to find a creative solution
to the noise problem, short of throwing the skimmer out
the window?
thanks!

I have a Prizm on a 20 gal too.
IMO it is more quiet than the BakPak2 that I had on there before...
I have never seen a quiet skimmer. I have not seem a RemoraC though....

I have Prism on my 20G and for the first weeks or so, it was louder than I
expected. After it broke in, though, it quieted down a lot.

Mine has never made any noises at all.. just a bit of a very low hum.. Have
you checked to see if something is caught in the impeller??

My SeaClone was making a lot of noise, it turned out I had WAY too much air
going in to it. I cranked it down, I'm still producing with it, and it is
much quieter.

There is a section in the Prism that the U tube goes into. Fill that up with
water, and it should help lower the volume level.
The Remora is virtually silent with the new O-ring around the collection cup.
