I have a Tank heater which has a sticking thermometer cut-out, It does not
connect when the water temperature drops, But if I tap the thing the
thermostat clicks in. It does disconnect OK.
Has anyone taken one of these units apart, It looks like the Rubber outer
case , with the control on the top is moulded to the inner plug.
If I remove the temperature adjusting switch does the outer case pull off.
Has anyone been successful, in stripping down a heater, and assembling it
again, in a water proof working state.
Or is it quicker to throw it away, and buy another one.

I had this sort of problem every few years with the Supreme heaters I used to
have. You can replace the thermostat contacts, and they will work like new for a
while. This is fine if your time isn't worth anything.

My take. Replace the heater with one that has an electronic thermostat.

For your safety and your fish's safety use the heater to heat make up water
in the garage. Don't try to fix it you'll probably break the glass tube
anyway. Buy yourself an electronically controlled heater ( not a mechanical
one which are prone to sticking contacts). Be sure the temp probe is well
secured in the tank so that it doesn't fall out and measure the air temp
while heating the water.

Yeah, that way you are only endangering your own safety and not the fishes.
