View Full Version : Can you dig it?

Ok gang I need to know what is going on in the latest endeavors of my
YSMClowns. As I told you before I have a set of YSMClowns that I moved into
a small (30 gallon) tank. The two quickly became a couple. They have
established a nest on the right side of the tank between 3 LRs and the
glass. They have only been together for a little less than a week and have
been spending there nights in this nest since day one. Yesterday I noticed
that the male has started digging holes in the nest by fanning his tail fin
to brush and blow the sand aside. My question is what is he up to? To see
pictures of the nest, the couple, and the hole click below.

I'm not sure who it was that told me to check my local service provider for
free web space but anyway you have created a monster. :-)
Thanks for any help anyone can provide and for all the help you all have
already provided.

Ok, but what I'm wanting to know is what that is. Are they just setting up
their "house" to their liking? Or is it something different altogether?

They are preparing a place to spawn and deposit their eggs. Normally,
since Anemones host Clownfish , they (Clowns) do this at the base or
below the foot of the Anemone for protection.
The female will lay the eggs, the male will fertilize them, and they
take turns in guarding and fanning the eggs. Once they hatch, the
newborns are carried off by the ocean currents.
Few will survive and make it to adulthood, as is nature's scheme. The
problem in captivity is providing the microscopic foods for them
(newborns) to eat. It appears that specific species have specific food
requirements, which we simply cannot know or provide for, hence the
difficulty in raising marine fish to a viable size. Many, many species
spawn in captivity, but only a handful of species are successfully able
to be raised to maturity in captivity. HTH

It is kind of fun to watch. So Far they haven't really messed with anything
other than their own "house". As long as they keep it that way all will be
good in fish land. :-) I was kinda hoping for the answer Def Lizard gave
but I have received a few private emails going with what you are saying.
Well I'll let the group know if there are any further developments with
this.
