I use nitrate levels to see how my tank is doing. In the FO tank when
they creep up to around 30ppm I get back on the weekly 10% water changing
program.
Steve
BTW - I don't use tap water. Tap water in my area has a TDS reading of over
500ppm (a very high number). After it comes out of my RO unit the TDS is at
001 ppm. The tap water is so bad we don't drink it anymore.

A lot depends upon where you live and the quality of your tap water. The
best answer I could give is would you give your tap water to drink to
yourself or your children? If the answer is no, then its unsuitable for
your fish.
In terms of frequency and volume, I did 1/3 water changes monthly (used
a 33 gal trash can <plastic>) treated with Amquel=AE. My salt mix was
IO and did use tap water, living then in Los Angeles (but I wouldn't
drink the water, either! ;) My tank was a 110gal. Never had any
problems connected with the water there. Every LFS and wholesaler I
knew used tap water in So. Calif. so I would say it was safe for fish
(maybe not humans). If you have any doubts, and don't want to invest in
equipment, most large supermarkets sell purified water from bulk
dispensers for about 25 cents per gallon. The only problem is bringing
40 gals home!
In the long haul of things, I would get a RO unit.
Ciao!
