View Full Version : Where are the old messages?

Why are there no messages from before April 29 showing in the
rec.aquaria groups? Some other groups I checked (such as alt.aquaria)
go back farther. I even joined this group (whatever that means) because
I thought that perhaps only members could see all the way back, but it
did not make any difference. I have not read the newsgroups for a month
and I wanted to catch up...

Why did Google mess with the newsgroups instead of leaving it alone?

I have learned that the retention of archived posts when accessing
via Google Groups is very unreliable. Some groups seem to retain for
months, others for only days, and the binary groups are even weirder.
Paying a couple bucks for reliable NNTP service is the only real fix
here, as Google isn't likely to do much about this anytime soon, IMO.
Try Giganews, I've had good luck with it.

In Groups.Google rec.aquaria.freshwater.misc goes back to Mach 1996.

You should be able to do searches that go back to the old days (1996
nor 95, somewhere around there). I have since google got superficially
messed up. Good luck and later!

I recently reported this issue to google (like so many others did, no
doubt) and this was the reply I got....... *cut 'n paste*

Thank you for your note. The group you mentioned,
rec.aquaria.freshwater.plants,
was recently the target of a spam attack. The spammer posted a large
number of
messages to several groups and then removed them. This caused the
appearance of
gaps in the archive of the group's posts. Please be assured that no
content
posts were removed.

Regards,
The Google Team ........

This doesn't really seem to shed any light on why the older posts still
aren't appearing though :(.

news.sunsite.dk

It's free for text groups - no binaries.
