View Full Version : Looking for equivalent to Ge sunshine (Chroma-50) fluo
Hi,
After reading alot in this newsgroup, one of the bulbs that is most
mentioned is the GE chroma-50 (sunshine)
I went to every hardware store in the city and the closest I could get
to one was at Canadian Tire but it was a 48" bulb.. I can only use 24".
On the other hand lots of Sylvania and a few Phillips around.
So I am wondering what is the closest bulb that Sylvania/Phillips has
to the Chroma-50?
I will have to settle to one of them instead. :(

The Philips bulb is called 'Colortone 50'. The Osram/Sylvania is called
'Design 50' or 'Designer 5000K'

Thanks, I looked into the sylvania site but they dont list the specs of
their bulbs. :(
Just my luck, can't find any of those bulbs anywhere in my area... no
ge, no phillips, no sylvania... :(
Darn it. :)

Can you buy via the Internet? It's the way I do it and it's far cheaper.
Does your hood have a reflector? It can increase the light output by at
least 50%, even 90% in some cases!

They are probably cheaper on the web, but the shipping costs kills the
deal. :(
As for the reflector I am not sure, probably not, it's just one of
those hoods that comes with the canopy in the kit.
I know I should get a double hood or PC or whatever, but the prices are
wayy too high imo.
Some of the kits sold like the aqualight ones do require an open tank
(Am I correct in that observation?) and I don't like that idea for some
reason. I guess I am afraid some of the fish tries to jump out of the
tank. :)

They only stock 4', you can special order 2' ones. I found small "Home Hardware"
stores were more ammenable to special orders that crappy tire or home despot.
Home despot usually stocks 2' Philips Colortone-50 whiich is pretty much the same tube,
in 2'. Always read the markings on the bulbs, those colors never change, the
packaging on the box does; I can't recall us they're calling them super daylight
or eXtreme natural or some crazy ass thing on the box, but the tube is marked quite
plainly as Colortone-50, which is Philips 5000K bulb.
Frankly I used whateevrs on sale, it doesn't matter to the plants, just how
they look to you.
A Home Hardware store that will order any tube for you can get you Philips Aquarelles, a
really nice 10K tube.
