To ensure that I have sufficient minerals in the soft tap water that I add
to my aquarium, I've decided to start using Tropic Marin. My question is:
Should I dose the aquarium or only the water that I add with water changes?

Thanks - Dave

doesn't it have specific instructions on the packaging?

usually you add an initial amount of any product depending on the
aquarium volume, then either dose a small amount daily or a specific
amount to new water, but it depends on the product.

I don't know the product, but if your water is very soft and/or this
raises the hardness significantly/quickly, then add it in a manner over
time which allows the fish to acclimate themselves. This suggests adding
it to the change water, but that would be influenced by your specific
application and situation.

Do you have a lot of plants? If so, you may want to choose a buffer
designed for plants and dose the aquarium as they use up the minerals.
Tom Barr does this with Seachem Equilibrium. Otherwise, dose the water
change water and test occasionally to be sure you're on target.

I was thinking of trace elements for plants, doh; but I think you're
talking about a buffer... apologies for dimness. (I use coral and shells
for my ridiculously soft water, I don't think they have a sudden impact
on hardness. The fish seem fine, anyway.)

Thanks for all of your replies. The water is OK (ish!) so what I think I'll
do is to add the water at changes rather than dose the aquarium. Once again
thanks!
