View Full Version : cleaning sand

In my fresh water tank I do my partial changes by vacuuming the gravel. If I
have a sand substrate in part of my marine tank would the vacuum not suck up
the sand?
AND I was planning on doing mostly sand with a few crushed coral sections as
I was told these help regulate the ph level. Is this right?

So I have no need for the crushed coral at all? Does the substrate matter to
the live rock or soft corals that I will eventually add?

nope none

only in that if you use crushed coral then you will have to clean it AND that will remove
benifitial life from your sand bed AND lower any chance of the sand bed breaking down
nitrates

So I guess the question is can I go to the beach (ocean) and get some sand
and boil it? Will that clean any possible toxins out enough or is it a risk?

A risk not worth taking. Boiling sand might get rid of organic nasties but
would not rid it of any chemical ones, which is the main problem with beach
sand.

Kelly, do a google on Southdown Tropical Playsand.
With a little effort (and luck) you should be able to find some at Lowes or
Home Depot.
