Can someone tell me if they think this picture is iron bacteria or is it
rust:

Magnification is something like 800X. Documentation I've seen says most
iron bacteria form long strands.

around plug 'oles in sinks and tubs.

Sheated bacteria. My well has iron bacteria, Leptothrix spp. It doesn't
appear to have affected the fish. Periodically I chlorinate the well
(every 3 years) to knock it back. If you have iron bacteria, your toilet
tank will have a red dusting on all surfaces inside.
