View Full Version : water change % of what?
So it is suggested to do a water change of about 20-25% every few weeks (3-4
weeks). Is this 25% of the tank? or 25% of water in the tank after
evaporation?
So I have a 50 gallon tank, is that a water change of 12.5 gallons? Or from
the 40 gallons (after 10 gallons have evaporated) a 20% water change (10
gallons evaporate + 10-12% of tank)?
Thanks
You should be topping up on a regular basis so that your water volume is at
or
at least near capacity (or wherever you normally keep it).
You need to keep in mind that as the water evaporates it leaves the salt
behind causing
an increased salinity. Keeping your tank topped off with make for a more
constant
and stable salinity which, of course is important to the health of your
critters.
That being said, i think i was doing about 10-12% on my 50 every other week
or so...

Although I don't know any Best that applies to all tanks regardless of
the specific set-up, I have noticed what appears to me to be a striking
difference between my 29 gallon tank that I dismantled and the 55 to
which I transferred the rocks, corals, and fish and to which I added a
couple fish. The smaller tank had a *needier* appearance, so I changed 5
gallons every week; after 2 weeks the larger tank only seemed to need a
little vacuuming in one corner, so I changed only the same 5 gallons.
That's one fourth of what I was doing. The corner looked like a little
cesspool and I think it may be the Kole Tang that has trained himself to
sort of sleep in one area and poop in another. Each of the five fish
and three shrimps definitely has a favorite sheltered spot, but I'm
surprised at the sort of toilet training. Bottom line, if the tank
looks unclean in any way or tests indicate a need for change, I change
the amount of water that vaguely appears to do the job. Science, this
is definitely not.

You may find that the accumulation of detritus in one area is not due to the
tangs excellent toiletry habits! It is more likely to be a dead spot in your
water flow, i.e. an area that is unreached by the power heads (or whatever
means you have of generating currents). You may need to re-direct the flow
or add power heads to cater for this.

I have excellent success in my 50 G established tank changing 5 gallons or
so every week, sometimes every other week. I also will run a cannister
filter with carbon and foam filter, which I clean regularly to avoid nitrate
production. Seems to work well, I have not seen my tank this healthy in a
long time. I skim as well and dose the usual supplements, top off with
carbon and resin filtered tap water, but its not RODI.

I did think of that and redirected the flow, but I rather liked the
thought of my tidy tang scurrying over to his little outhouse in the
deep. There are other clues that you are correct, however.

When you add water to top off the evaporated, is it RODI+salt or just RODI?
Will adding RODI+salt further increase the salinity levels?
Thanks again.

I add close to a gallon of RODI (no salt) to the 55 gallons every day.
I have no top to the tank and the lights are suspended several inches
above the tank, so there's lots of evaporation of water, but of course
salt doesn't evaporate.

I would highly recommend reading:
Natural Reef Aquariums: Simplified Approaches to Creating Living Sal****er
Microcosms
by John Tullock
This is the first book I loan to anyone thinking of a reef tank.
Actually, you need to read ANY book on marine aquarium basics.

Interestingly enough, this is the book that I have not 2 feet from me
that a coworker loaned me to read. Very worn book as its been loaned out

I have no doubt the messy spots are the result of currents; I thought it
was obvious that I was tongue-in-cheek suggesting an outhouse area.
However, although I know very about fish behavior, it is clear to me
that some have a sense of territory, not only seeking haven in one
particular spot, but will also bring the food to that area before eating
it. Both my Clarkii clown and coral-banded shrimp do that perhaps half
the time. I would be only somewhat surprised to learn that some species
would perform other biological functions - especially mating - in a
repeatedly chosen area. That they would defecate in some tidy corner
seems highly unlikely, but the remote possibility is just enough for me
to enjoy the thought when I see a little pile where the Kole Tang hangs out.

When water evaporates, salt does not, and the salinity of the remaining
water increases accordingly. When you top off with a couple of gallons of
water, if you do it with salt water, you then increase the salinity even
more. Over time you would end up with the Dead Sea.
Top off with clean, unsalted water. Salt Creep, which causes salt particles
to adhere to the edges of the outside of the tank, cords, skimmers etc, will
slowly over time decrease the salinity of the tank, but that is much slower
than top off water evaporation and you can control that when you do water
changes.

Your message headers seem to indicate you're in New York, so I'm

I just bought this book yesterday as recommended by my nearest decent
aquarium, 2 hours drive away. There are nearly as many books on the
subject as there is conflicting advice in this hobby. Makes me feel a
whole heap better that I managed to buy a book recommended by one of you
here as well, $57 AUS well spent I hope.

A general rule is 25% of the tank volume per month. If you
have a 50g tank, 25% of 50g would be changed.
There are lots of ways of accomplishing this task, and some
change more while others change less, or do so more
frequently or less frequently. The important thing is water
quality, and a good routine tends to achieve successful results.
