Just make sure the water's ph is around 7.2 with a small amount of salt (do
a search in this group for the amount) and make sure it has the standard
characteristics of most if not all other freshwater tropical fish which is 0
ammonia, 0 nitrites, and low nitrates, etc. I don't even have salt in my
fancy guppies water and the ph might be a little lower and mine are
thriving. I try to keep the temperature around 80 degrees fahrenheit to keep
the fancy guppies breeding and flourishing. Good luck, later!

I find that guppies like hard water and warm temps. Mine are thriving
in my tapwater at pH 7.6, 270 ppm hardness, 78F. If your water is soft
then the salt helps. Supposedly if you can grow watersprite, than you
have the perfect conditions for guppies.

On the other hand, I think it's possible to worry about things too much-
I bought some ten cent feeder fish (as fry) for a container pond, but
wound up using them to keep my Quarantine Tank cycled...

As it turns out, I keep that tank at 70 F, with some of the softest
water in North America, and they're just fine. (I know, andecdotes make
bad science)

While I wanted White Clouds for my container pond, they turned out to be
mostly (male) guppies. As it happens, the little jerks fight over
territory constantly and are quite happy to chase almost anything around
the tank looking for something to copulate with. I'm still waiting on a
Zebrafish or White Cloud Hybrid :-)
