View Full Version : mushroom coral question

A week ago a friend gave me 40 lbs of live rock (he downsized tanks)
He kept all of his corals, however there are spots on the rock where
burgundy colored mushrooms had been attached and they appear to be
growing, and there are a couple that appeared on the sand bottom.
They are open and appear to look normal. If I just leave them alone
will they be fine or do I need to feed them something? I just
replaced my cheap hood with a canopy and have PC 65 watt day and
actinic bulbs in it. (29 gallon tank)

They will be fine. Later on, you could feed phytoplankton if you like, but
mushrooms are pretty tough to kill.

mentioned they need iodine.

I wouldn't add iodine to a tank for mushrooms. Any iodine they need is
already in your sal****er mix. They are not iodine pigs. More potential
harm from iodine than good.

I rarely ever dose Iodine. My mushrooms got way out of control, even with
minimal (every 2 months) water changes.

So in other words, they are corals for "dummies"? I will just leave
them be then. Thanks.

Really? I wish mine would do the same...
I have no problem with big bubbles, they are relatively easy
to take of the rock, but my crabs are not in taste for small ones.
