View Full Version : Breeding Livebearer Trick

I breed Swordtails and Mollies. I just can't bring myself to put a fully
loaded fish into a net or a trap for the delivery of the fry.
I found this idea somewhere and it works great! Put Marbles on the
bottom of the breeding tank instead of gravel. When the female delivers
the fry they will hide between the marbles and the female can't find
them. It gives me time to get the female out of the tank and turn the
tank into a nursery.
Hope this idea helps someone.

I did this with egglayers as well. I bred Danios a few times just for
the heck of it, and the parents would immedietly eat the eggs. With
the marbles on the bottom, the large danio eggs filtered down to the
glass bottom. Mom could be removed at leisure.

Clever idea - I should try it. My breeding/nursery tank is a ten-gallon,
and I use terrarium grassy weeds on the bottom for the fry to swim down
into. The mothers can't follow them in - and they can swim in and out as
they want.
