View Full Version : krib with rock stuck in mouth

My female krib seems to have a rock stuck in her mouth... she's
swimming around with her mouth wide open and I can't see in too well,
but it looks like a rock to me.
She's been like this for almost a day now... is there anything I
can/should do? She's pretty small... less than 2 inches, so I don't
know...

Thanks

If you are certain that this is a rock or foreign object of some kind,
you might try netting the fish, hold the fish between your fingers
(wet your fingers before grabbing it) and press with thumb and
forefinger of your other hand on the side of the head of the fish
behind the rock, to try to force it out of the mouth.

Alternatively, hold the fish as described above, and try to pick out
the rock with a pair of tweezers? Tweezers are probably too large for
this size of fish...

Be aware that I haven't tried either of these procedures on any fish
as far as I recall. Just thinking out loud.

this worries me; wouldn't the possibilities for
gill-damage/fish-crushing be huge?

Yes, fine, I'll go along with it. But the point is: IF this fish does
have a rock stuck in it's mouth and can't spit out this rock, the fish
is for an absolute fact going to die, no question about it. So in this
situation, I at least, would take drastic action.

Ended up using a toothpick to pry it out. The fish was definitely
shaken up (mouth stayed hanging open for quite a while and seemed very
dazed) but she seems to be back to normal now.
I don't know how she managed to fit that rock in her mouth in the
first place...
Thanks.
