View Full Version : Hurray for Hagen

Just had to make my first post here after several months of lurking quietly.
I have a modest little aquarium of some 40 gallons (Imp.) with a reasonable
number of goldfish in it. I ran under gravel filteration supplemented by a
sort of cartridge thingy in the side of the tank. It was all air pump driven
and lt seemed rather ineffective to me, although the inmates seemed happy
enough.

Then a few days ago I splurged and purchased a Hagen Stingray underwater
power filter of the right capacity for my tank. It looks a lot like
something out of Revenge of the Sith, but after just a few hours of running
it made the tank look like new. But the real laugh was when my cheeky little
Blackmoor decided to get into the jet of water coming out of the unit. He
has eyes like Jar Jar and is about as aerodynamic (aquadynamic?) as a
packing crate. My son and I laughed for ages watching him power up to max,
light the afterburners, and bust his guts (almost) to stay in place. I think
he likes it. He certainly seems to spend a lot of time in the jetstream. If
he keeps this up he will burn out early in life I think.

Anyway, I just wanted to say that all these fancy air driven filters and so
on are nothing compared to a unit that actively pumps the water, rather than
relying on air bubbles to drive it. Would I be right in thinking that the
much greater filtering effectively increases the capacity of the aquarium?
In other words, can I increase the number of fish in it above what it could
reasonably carry if it just had the air driven filter system?

In closing, this is the first time I have asked a question myself here, but
I have gained a heap of information and had a lot of enjoyment reading the
posts for a past few months. Thanks all.
