My guppies in my bedroom tank had babies this morning, I am looking forward
to seeing them grow up. Normally I don't post about these things but for
this particular tank it has been what seems like forever since this
particular tank has had baby guppy fry in it - the mother took her time and
now we are one big happy family. Later!

Hi Daniel,

Congratulations!!!!

How great to hear happy news rather than the usual sick/dying fish :-) I
always like to see fry suddenly turn up in the tank - shows the fish are
happy

How many have you got?

I am guesstimating around 20 to 30 fry - pretty large in my experience.
Usually its a brood size of 9 or 10. They're doing great and are happy. I am
happy too because I got the maintenance done (water change/gravel vac/
filter maintenance) despite so much that needed to be done here (lawn
mowing, etc.) and I finished off all of the "chores" and "errands" for now.
I love gravel vacing - it's fun! I need to get my technique down on a few
things such as starting the vortex filter siphon (I need to reread the
instructions on the internet - seems like I read before that all you need to
do is switch the filter on and turn it upside down a few times and stand it
right side up and it should start a siphon? I tried that until I gave up for
now because the air in it doesn't seem to go away and let the water siphon)
and some other stuff I think. Beautiful day here and my fish are enjoying
some direct sunshine. Later!

I'm very pleased for you :-)

My gravel syphons are manual....takes a lot of arm power...and in recent
weeks a little bit of sucking as well....ughhh the amount of tank water I
have swallowed....I can't believe they all gave up at the same time in
creating the vacuum....or maybe it's just my "arm power" decreasing in
direct proportion to the number of tanks...lol
My fish love the gravel vacs....I think I mentioned in an earlier post/topic
how my Mbunas love it a little too much - lol and start getting a little out
of hand....

My guppies just try to get in the way...but move out of the way if I tell
them sternly enough.....and I have caught a few platy fry in
it...fortunately noticed in time.

The magnetic algae scraper was a nightmare with everyone trying to get
between it and the glass - I caught my finger when it was out of water - I
dread to think what it would have done to the fish...

As I said before, it is great when fish breed in your tank - brings a smile
to my face....OK I might have problems elsewhere but it is the cycle of
life - one tank has problems but another brings joy - as good a reason for
MTS as I can think of - lol

My Mbuna fry (the 3 of them) are doing very well in the tank.....I can
almost identify the parents of one of them as he is now getting the markings
if not the colour....the other two I'm not sure yet. I think there might be
more on the way....had an extremely rotund Rusty who has now gone into
hiding....

Good luck with your babies

Gill

Thanks Gill! I like gravity powered gravel vacs/siphons as in order to use
it you just fill the cone with water, plug the other end with your finger,
and hold the cone up so the air in the tube and cone can flow up and out.
Then you just put the cone in the tank water, release your finger from the
tubing/hose and it then works. I think I have the technique down with the
vortex (I use the vortex for water polishing) now and I just need to order a
backflush adapter to clean the vortex out. The vortex works good as a gravel
vac except for the baby guppies being sucked in (never happened to me
because I have never tried it, which is common sense) and the fact that
water has to be removed from the tank anyways so why not use a bucket (to
rescue any babies that might have been sucked in) and siphon based gravel
vac that is gravity operated and also removes water at the same time. I
haven't had to suck start a siphon in years, I did try one of those rubber
bulbs you can get for canister filters and the vortex and I can't get any of
them to work worth beans. Anyway, cheer up Gill, I know you have lost some
fish recently but the best you can do is minimize it in the future, disease
is lame - it tries to ruin people's and pet's and animal's lives. Keep
trying , later!

with a standard siphon gravel vac, the easiest way to start the siphon is to
lower the tube into the tank with the open end tilted toward the surface and
let it fill. Then raise it above the tank while keeping your thumb close to
the other end of the hose. The instant water starts coming out the other end
of the hose, put your finger over the end to stop it, and keeping the
gravel vac part as it was - put it back into the tank. Let it fill with
water and then turn it back towards the gravel and remove your finger from
the end of the hose, drop it in your bucket and away you go. You don't have
to suck on the hose to get it started at all....

We used to use the same procedure but for some reason it is not working
anymore - first we thought it was the syphon not being sealed properly -
bought a new one and had same problem. It all coincided with an air brick -
maybe too many bubbles - who knows - one day I'll post on it.
