My ghost stays up at the top of my tank alot now a days. He is eating alot.
I feed him bloodworms ( and sinking shrimp pellets). I am wondering when
enough is enough. He seems like he will just eat as much as I will feed him.
And when I do stop, he just stays up there looking for more. Do I feed him
till he stops, or do fish eat as much as you feed them. My others just come
to the top to eat when it is feeding time, but Casper (my ghost) seems to
beg for food.
Thanks.

Stop feeding him. I mean, don't feed him more and more because he's
always looking for more. My Ghost is looking for food all day long and
all night long, so apparently this one that I have never sleeps. He
shouldn't be fed so much that his stomach is fat, all the time. Fish
which are overfed can in the long run receive liver or kidney damage
or something (I don't remember which organ it is that might be
damaged.)

They are nocturnal and sensitive to bright lights. They require a cave
as a hiding place. No cave, bright lights, it will hang around the top
shadow away from the lights.
They can grow to 20" (51cm) and even at 5" can easily eat sleeping
Tetras at night.
Some train them to be more active in the day time by adding a
glass/plastic tube (chimneys of hurricane lanterns) or 'ghost houses' to
get them acclimated to the light.

So is mine, which surprises me. I thought maybe something was wrong, cause I
read they don't like bright lights, and yet there he is at the top of the
tank looking for/devouring any food that might be available. He seems ok
otherwise. I just wanted to make sure nothing was wrong, other than a
healthy appetite, and make sure I didn't overfeed him.
Thanks.

I have a huge cave for him that he was hiding in for the first few days that
I had him. BUT now he is out, out, out... And even when I have my lights on
(which are bright for the plants). Could something be wrong with him? My
ammonia has spiked and has been at about 0.5 ppm for a week or so, but I am
doing water changes and using ammo-lock to detoxify the ammonia. He has just
started to do this for the last 2 days or so. He is eating well, swimming
normal, and looks otherwise healthy and happy..
Thanks

I have never had one, every ref to them says they are very sensitive to
water quality.
They are also electric hunters, they emit an electrical charge to find
food. These types of electric fish can be very sensitive to stray
electrical current in the water, maybe you should add a grounding post
to your aquarium?

Another problem in diagnosis is that these fish have variable personalities.
I had a ghost knife for almost five years who would swim around rather
openly and take food from my hand.

Mine comes out from his cave as soon as the lid is opened, looking for
munchies I think! They appear to be quite adept at working out where and
when food comes from, so if he appears happy and healthy, I wouldn't worry
too much if he's out and about!
