Got a nice new aquarium about three weeks ago. The fish have now got used to it and don't look as distressed. Anyway, what I want to know is should I have an air stone connected to a separate air pump in the aquarium as well as the filter or is that not required?

Air stone will provide more air and do a better job but it is not required
if there is an openning to allow for water to air surface exchanges.

Depends if the water is moving on the surface. If it is, you are unlikely to
need one, but they can look cool and fish do like to play in them

Thanks for that - am adding a nice blue light to the aquarium this weekend so I'll add the air stone as well.
