View Full Version : So now I'm really depressed.....

Death toll in last two weeks:-
Matt's 15 gall tank 2 Mollies and 2 Rosy Barbs - inexplicable
Mbuna Tank 1 Yellow Lab and 1 Rusty - pretty much accountable
5 gall Kitchen tank - just found a dead oto - don't know why
7.5 gall Hex Tank - seems OK but the Goby's won't eat (except anything but
frozen brine shrimp)....and the Panda Corys are a bit quiet....still OK
though
Community tank - some losses following Ich treatment but stable for 3 weeks
plus
Matt's 30 gall tank - stable
My plan for moving the remaining fish from the 15 gall can't go ahead - I
can't put them in the 5 gall when we have just had a death....I'm going to
have to buy another tank for this - can't happen until Friday
Maintenance is done - ie water changes and gravel vacs. Water quality all
tests out fine...I've had a heavy work committment recently but kept it
up....even to the point of almost sleeping while I do it...Nobody is
overfed....no new additions
I WILL rally again but tonight I am depressed....

So sorry Gill! :-( The only time I lost several fish in a short time
was due to my mishandling of chemicals. I swore off "adjusting".
My fish loses are one at a time events however I did lose 4 male
mollies in a week's time. I moved males to stop over population. The
female mollies were fine, but the boys seemed to have missed the
ladies. Could such really be true?
I wonder why the "Community" tank and Matt's 30 gallon are stable?
With all that has happened plus your extra work load, I would be
suspicious of your assessment of the 7.5 gal Hex tank. Pandas are a
bit quiet? Gobies eating only brine shrimp? Perhaps you are reading
too much into this tank. Also, I wonder if this tank is overfed. I
know you believe you are not overfeeding, but it is the easiest sin,
in my experience. I only feed flake food and all my fish churn around
waiting at feeding times. In an attempt to fight Black Hair Algae I
once covered the 75 gallon with a blanket to keep out light for 2
days. Didn't lose any fish for lack of food.
Mbuna tank? "Pretty much accountable?" I don't understand this
entry.
It sounds like only 2 tanks are having current problems Kitchen and
Matt's. Could be coincidence. Could be a streak of bad luck. I hope
your not stressed out. Maybe it would be better to hold of getting a
new tank until things settle. I sure would consider doing small daily
changes of water in Matt's tank. Couldn't Matt take that
responsibility? If he doesn't, he doesn't, but frequent water changes
are the holy grail in my mind. I have never found water tests to tell
me anything. Further I don't trust them.
I worry that your plate is too full. Being a working, single parent
is a full plate! Your mention of friends sounds like you are trying
to keep up a social life.
I hope you find a way to stabilize your life. I don't handle problems
well. My first reaction is, "I will never solve this problem!" And I
believe it even though I have had a life time of solving problems of
all sorts. I just grit my teeth and keep going and of course the
problem gets solved. I look for the enemy only to find the enemy is
me!
Best of luck.

Hi Dick,
Bad night last night.....the Oto just did for me :-( Back to normal now.....
Sorry it looks like some of my postings have given the wrong impression - I
am not a single parent - I have 3 kids - two from a first marriage and
another with my current husband. Matt and his brother go over to their Dads
around 50% of the time. I do however work full-time. I also have a tendency
to analyse everything - comes from the job that I do - Tech Support - and
that includes any problems I get with the fish - hence the unexplained
deaths in Matt's tank puzzling me so much....I wouldn't have posted over the
Mbuna's and the Otos as to a certain degree I understand why they might have
happened.
By "pretty much accountable" for the deaths in the Mbuna tank I meant I
understand why it happened. It's not like Matt's tank where I just don't
understand it. I've only had the Otos in the Kitchen tank for around 3
weeks - the plan was to put them in the Community tank once I was sure they
were ok - this death could be "just one of those things" and a good example
of why QT tanks work - this isn't quite a QT tank because of the Betta but
he's not been there very long.
I am worried about the Hex tank. It does need a vac and water change though.
The gobies just have never seemed interested in food....unless it is frozen
brine shrimp. The Panda's eat well. I don't feed this tank as often as the
others - I am concerned with the Gobies not really eating much that I might
overfeed - currently a very small amount once a day with one day off a week.
This was one reason for getting the Pandas - to get anything that falls to
the bottom of the tank. The Pandas are quite active at the moment - maybe
they just need feeding more - they relish the sinking tabs. I did quite a
bit of research on the Peacock Gobies when I got them and a lot of the
information on the web does point to them being finicky eaters - they are
also described in places as Peacock Gudgeons - real name is Tateurndina
ocellicauda. In fact most of the info suggests live food and possibly
frozen - this seems to be born out by my experience - although not what I
was told by my LFS when I mentioned that they didn't eat dried food (he's
usually quite good) but I think I'll stick with my own experience here.
I have managed to negotiate for a small acrylic tank that can be easily
stored away when not in use....so as I'm off work tomorrow that is what we
are going to do. Matt's fish will move into there temporarily and the tank
in questionwill get broken down and bleached. We will then set it up again
and reintroduce the fish - I will use the filter in the QT tank to keep
everything cycled.
The problem in Matt's tank is the first time we've had anything happen like
this with multiple unexplained deaths....maybe I've just been lucky up until
now. Usually any fish losses I've had have been for an understandable
reason.
As a quick update his three remaining fish are still looking fit and feeding
well.

Gosh Gill, here I had you pictured as this tired single mom and
worried that you were stretched too far and you wipe out my image.
Glad you found a good second partner.
I am analytical by nature and enjoy solving problems (except for my
doom and gloom attitude).
I guess this is a good place to stop this thread. No more Gill and
Matt to worry about, hopeful future to wonder about. It has been
interesting Gill. Maybe there will be future installments glowing
with successful results.
