View Full Version : Any Canadian Killifish enthusiasts here?

Hello all,
I'm just getting back into aquaria after about an 8 year absence due
to work, and am wondering if there are any Canadian or New Englander
Killfish enthusiasts here?
I'm setting up several small tanks in the hopes of finding someone who can
sell me some eggs while the weather is warm enough to ship them to
Halifax, NS.
Specifically I'm hoping to find someone with:
Rivulus cylindraceous (preferred)
or
various Epiplatys
Though, as there seem to be NO killis available in the local stores,
I'd love to begin (again) with almost anything.
Hoping to hear from you,
Mack

Richard Sexton posts here sometimes and he is a serious killifan. I
believe he's Canadian. Maybe you can find an email addy on his website,
http://aquaria.net. There are also often killifish eggs in peat for
sale on aquabid.

Could someone clear up what species fall into the killfish category for
me? Thanks in advance.

That's "killifish", not "killfish". Small, gorgeous colors, short
lived. Do a Google.

Yah, thanks for the spell check. I could do a Google, but that doesn't
help with a question I have specifically asked to the people here. If I
Googled everything I would neither need to be posting and replying to posts
on here and I also wouldn't get the firsthand experience from some of the
local fish experts. But thanks for your suggestion all the same.

Killis, aka top minnows, are of the cyprinodontidae family of fish.
Generally short-lived with rapid maturation, some live in rain puddles and
spend their entire lify cycle during the rainy season. Once the puddles dry
up
and the fish all die, the eggs lay dormant in the mud until the next heavy
rains
repeat the process. (again, this applies to some types only)
Major popular genus are the various:
Epiplatys
Rivulus
Austrolebias
Fundulopanchax
Nothobranchius
Hope this helps.
