View Full Version : Figured out siphon starter....

I am reporting that my vortex siphon starter does work better than "doesn't
work worth beans", actually it works great. You just pump air into the out
hose (of a canister filter), then pump air into the in hose (of a canister
filter), then pump air into the out hose (of the canister filter), then pump
air out of the out hose (of the canister filter) and gravity should start
filling the canister filter (in my case a fluval 404). The hagen siphon
starter will not pump air into a hose so it isn't as good in my opinion
(pumping air in would be difficult). It is easy and I am very pleased as a:
I didn't waste my money on a siphon starter (vortex) after all, and b: No
more dinking around trying to get the filter filled without suck starting (I
came close to suck starting several times before this new discovery, but
haven't done that for a long time and few and far between). I must say I am
happy about this and felt like reporting my discovery to you all, later!

Yeah! I love it when a plan comes together.

I love gravity! I have to say I am more stubborn than I first see myself as
and sometimes I even am very foolish and dimwitted. I say this because I
spent all of that time and effort to find a reliable way to start a siphon
with a canister filter or vortex xl and tonight it dawned on me how to do
that without trial and error. I just need to keep the water surface in the
out pipe lower than the water surface in the in pipe and apply the siphon
starter onto the out pipe. A little water is pulled in from the tank and
into the in hose and gravity does the rest. If I want to make sure
absolutely all bubbles are out of the system my option is to let a little
water come out of the out hose into a bucket. Buckets are very useful, I
like to use them to store wet things and might buy 4 more 5 gallon buckets
for some of that purpose. No more banging my head into the wall trying to
figure out why my equally elevated hose ends won't allow a siphon to start
as I have figured out to keep the out hose lower until siphon starts. Enough
of my possibly enlightening rambling, later!

Nomore dinking around trying to get the filter filled without suck starting (I came close to suck starting several times before this new discovery, but haven't done that for a long time and few and far between).
But what's wrong with drinking a little fish water? All those bacteria and germs and virus things just help build your immune system! lol I don't have a problem with sucking, but then I've only got two 5gals, a 10gal, and seven 1gals (they get complete changes). And one of the 5gals is not in use. When I start my 30 gal, maybe that might be an idea, or I could get my kid to do the siphon starting! Build her immune system too! Though she'd try to catch the fish and drink them down, so maybe not.

Maybe that's why I haven't had a cold or flu for awhile....How are the betta
fry doing? Haven't been updated for awhile, later!

Hey some one remembered! Thanks for asking. They're still growing, and I've noticed a little bit of aggresiveness from 5-6 of them. So I'm just waiting until this weekend to jar some.
BTW, see the new topic I'm posting, PLEASE!!!!
