How about a closed loop? Or will you have room to walk all the way around it
the full 360 degrees?
You could put an overflow dead center.

ive seen that, it looks actually very good, there is/was a tank sold that was shaped like
a coffie table, with a clear top and everything, the overflow was centered, and returns
were attached to the overflow, pointing towards the longest section, the overflow was a
rectangle as was the tank, with a top that covered the guts with black pvc so you couldnt
see them.

Thanks Marc, I would like to walk 5 sides, want an overflow, Murphy's Law
states, if I mount a center overflow box with a Durso type setup a $200.00
fish will go into the overflow, a standpipe is good, but if it isn't at
least 2" dia, it will not be able to handle the water flow, I am thinking
about 3 1.5" dia standpipes??? still in the thinking stage.
Thanks for the input,

Thanks for the reply Richard,
This tank was for sale on Sal****erFish.Com from some University of Florida
student in Gainesville (he was going to put a gator in it), he had a black
wood hood on it, there is a patch in the center covering a 3" and a 1" hole,
the top edges were pretty chewed up so I cannot imagine a nice top on it, we
daddo'd six 2.5" x 3/8" pieces of Plexiglas and glued them to the top, the
tank was pretty rough but no bad scratches and almost no small ones.

How about 2 2" drainpipes? And a mesh screen over the top to keep everything
out, like the kind used to keep leaves out of gutters?
If you are worried about a fish jumping into the overflow, how about jumping out
of the tank period?! ;)

If they go into a drain pipe they will end up in the sump, which is alright,
if they go into a skimmer box with a Durso stand pipe they are trapped with
no way to get them out in the middle of 5' dia tank
