Hi,
I have a 1.2m tank which has been taken over by 4 tinfoil's.
I want to move the small fish to a .6m tank.
I used new gravel, filled the tank with water from the big tank, moved
plants across and filled the filter with washings from the established
tank.
It has been 3 days now and Nitrite and Ammonia show 0 with liquid test
and strips.
How much longer should I wait before moving the small fish across?
TIA

If temps are stable and filters running, move a few of the small fish.
You'll also need to seed the filter again at the same time as you move
the fish. Three days without any ammonia from fish is a bit long for
filter bacteria and you probably already lost the bacteria you put in
the tank.
Wait a week or two to be sure there's no mini-cycle and move a few more
small fish to build up the population in the small tank gradually.

I'd watch the Nitrates to see if they start to rise ( >20ppm) before I would
consider the cycle well on it's way. Sometimes as you said, mini-cycles will
"get ya" if you aren't careful.

Thanks, moved some danio's across this morning. Still OK, if all goes
well will move some more next week.

I know you will do well. We have some great folks here willing to help with
just about any setup issue you may have. Heck I just added my 3rd tank this
last week and by listening to the sage advice given, it's cycle it fully
complete in 4 days ( I did use a lot of old substrate but new filtration)
:-)

Thanks to the info from you and Elaine the transfer has been
successful.
Everybody is fine in their new planted tank. Catching was not as
difficult as I anticipated.
Only problem is there seems to be too much light or the change from
deep water to this is foreign to them. When the lights are on they all
go to the bottom of the tank.
It is a 10g/55l tank. Well planted but not well established yet.
Have 2 x 9w compacts.
Is this too much?
Should I put in some floating plants to cut the glare until the rest
are growing?
Change the 9w to 7 or 5W?
Thoughts ?
Thanks
