I am currently using an internal filter for my 55 gallon planted tank. Currently, I am using an internal filter for its quietness. However, the internal filter practically does nothing to cleaning the tank water other than move it around. Now, I want to get a new external canister filter.
I am planning to get this filter:
Eheim Ecco Comfort Canister Filter- 2234
My first concern...
Do these filters make a lot of noise? If so, are there any better alternatives as to canister filters that make very little noise?
My second concern...
Is this an effective filter, a filter you would recommend me to get?
I currently have 1 pair of angelfish, 6 bleeding heart tetras, 9 ottos, and 10 japonica shrimps in this tank.
thanks!!

I have two Hagen Fluval 304s on my 75g planted tank. I have to put my hands
on them to feel if they are running because I can not hear them at all.
Sometimes they will make a little noise but that has always been because
they needed to be cleaned.
The Fluval also has a nice quick disconnect feature to make cleaning very
easy.

I'm currently using 2 Eheim 2217's and a 2250. I find them to be quiet
and effective, though sometimes the 2250 develops an irritating rattle
that I have to seek out and tighten up. No such problem with the 2217's.
Good filters IMO.

I think you would find any of the modern (current) Eheims or Fluvals to
be quiet and effective, however the reviews on the Ecco (economy) are
mixed.

Thanks Paul, NetMax, and DanRad for all your advices!
I went to get the Fluval 304 (Eheim filters weren't available) today. I just installed it; the filter doesn't even make a sound! :)

I have an Ecco 2231, am quite happy with it.
I find I don't need to do as many filter cleans :) but it keeps the tank in
great shape. I probably am due to a filter clean, been 5 months or so since
I did the last...

Hi,
I have a 50gal planted aquarium and I use an Eheim 2217. at first it was
quite noisy, but found that was due to air bubbles caught in it. My tank is
a lot clearer than with my previous filter (via aqua). The only problem is,
there are no filter media baskets in mine and priming can be a bit of a pain
after cleaning out the media, but all in all, I would not go back to any
other filter...
Hope this helps.
Justin.
