Hey fishy folks.
On another newsgroup I belong to that is strictly Bettas, there's a
member there who tells me that he has seen male Bettas show *vertical*
barring for submission.
I'm not talking about juvie males, as juvies show horizontal and
vertical barring at times for no reason. It's like a toddler blabbing
on and on and never really saying anything, just noise.
Anyway, I have been trying to ask the guy more about this and another
person (a moderator actually) keeps ripping on me like I'm off the wall
for asking this guy questions about it.
I'm asking everywhere I visit or post to if anyone has ever seen this
before.
In nearly 30 yrs I haven't seen it or heard of it happening, so
obviously my first question to "Phil" was (in a nice way), whether he
possibly got vertical and horizontal mixed up. Believe or not, even
adults get them confused sometimes. So, understandably that was and
should have been my first question to him.
After finding out that he didn't, and that he's been in the hobby and
breeding for 50 yrs, I was assured that ok..he's a big breeder for many
years and I can trust the what he is saying is right.
Now I'm trying to find out more about why I haven't ever seen this, and
why his are doing this.
It's a shame one of the mod's at this other group is being a jerk.
I mean heck, if you kept and bred a certain fish for nearly 30 yrs and
somebody who's been doing it longer than you and by much more volume
than you...has seen an entirerly different body language on his
fish...wouldn't you be filled with questions and want to learn about
this?? I sure as hell am!
I feel like I woke up in bazzaro world. = /

Groups can be so weird sometimes. I wonder if the breeder has
hybridized his fish with one of the species of betta other than imbelis?

Hey Tynk, don't feel so bad. I've got another strange one that I HAVE seen.
A PLAID betta!!!!
My girl Beauty (blue) goes = most of the time. But in the days before I breed her with Sparky, she was |||. What's most interesting about her is she spooks easy. One morning, I turned on the light, and she went =. A little later I came back in and looked at her. Her ||| were coming back, but the = was still visible! It was #!!!! Wow! A PLAID betta!?!?!?! I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it. I only wish I had gotten some sort of a picture...
I am thinking about breeding her again, and watching to see if it might happen again. But I think I'll be busy with my other breeding pair!

Just looked very closely at mine and he is chequered....at the moment the
vertical are fainter than the horizontal but they are both definitely
there.....But he always has been a strange fish ;-)

This group is special, much more tolerant, even sympathetic. So many
people are afraid to wander and so quick to criticize.
I don't have Bettas, but I often read about fish, such as a recent
thread about Siamese Algae Eaters or another about Clown Loaches,
where someone else describes behavior I haven't seen, or another
person questions if I know what I am talking about.. In Mexico City,
I picked up a phrase that later I found known by others: "Cada Cabeza
es un mundo," each head is a world. Not only do our fish have
individual uniqueness, but we see things differently.
Then too, some people are just hard to talk too.
