I have just set up a 2L DIY but it last only 1 week or less. What can
I do to prolong the activity?
All responses welcome of course.

There are various recipes circulating over the net. My limited
experience is with the Hagen canisters and they generally ran about 3
weeks (+ or - several days). To prolong the activity, you need a bigger
container ;~) or to alter your recipe. Pay close attention to some of
the details (tap water, temperature etc) as these do affect the quality
of the fermentation process.
This recipe came from Rikko: ...start quote
4oz sugar
add 2ml (by volume - I used a Tetra/Wardley pH test tube) wine yeast
add 4ml baking soda
fill to 16oz line with lukewarm water (not tank water)
leave 4oz empty air
Shake a very tiny bit to get things moving (I tipped it upside down and
back - no more) and hook 'er up - I had my 2L pop bottle bubbling
steadily for about 2 months.
....end quote
I've never tried it. Other places to find recipes is The Krib and
rec.aquaria.freshwater.plants

I was reading on another forum that some people add coral to the mix. the
reaction stops when teh pH gets to a certain point (the reason for adding
baking soda) and the coral helps keep the pH at a point that helps...
never tried it myself... no money for the bubble ladder or reactor, no time
to rig up a DIY version.
