What are the black rails on your sump's baffles supposed to accomplish?

Yep- progress has been slow - doing this in my um . . . "spare" time. :)

As far as the black rails, they are pieces of flexible plastic conduit "wire
wrap" . They are channeled and not permanent. I just want to see how the
water flows over them . Bubble reduction? Dunno, just experimenting.
