I just purchased an 80g reef setup from a LFS which they delivered and setup
in my home office. The pump is very loud. I'm looking for suggestions for
soundproofing the equipment which is housed in a cabinet underneath the
tank. Thanks.

It will be much easier and cheaper for you to buy a quieter pump. What are
you using now?

It's a GEN-X PCX-100

if its only the pump

thick stryofoam and polyurethane glue
will do it.

IME, if the cabinet is wood, the pump's vibration will resonate and can be
amplified. Styrofoam or some sort of insulation between the pump and that
wood should help significantly.

I had the same problem with noise. Since my aquarium is on the first floor
of my house, I put the sump and skimmer in the basement. Although it
required some extra work and expense, it was well worth it.

Good luck!

Here is some great stuff made for this exact issue, "...inside
cabinets to damp noise from motors, pumps, etc..."

It is called sonex

Auralex also makes some, but both Auralex and Sonex are quite expensive.
They are designed for absorbing audio in recording studios. For some
cheaper material of the same quality go to www.markertek.com and search for
acoustic foam.

Why not just buy some accoustic ceiling panels? 2' x 4' panels are cheap (2 x 2
exist as well) and can be replaced when ruined relatively easily.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions. I ended up purchasing some materials at
http://soundproofing.org/sales/prices.html . They seem pretty knowledgeable
about this issue. In fact, the salesman there used to sell aquariums. I
sent him a jpg of my setup and he was able to advise me what the best
material would be for my circumstance. It was pretty pricey, but so was the
aquarium and supporting equipment. It should arrive tomorrow. I'll let you
know how it went.
