All this talk of Discus made me want to know more about them. I
looked them up in various sources on the net. They sound
soooooooooooooo coool! Now I want a discus tank! I just got a
30-gal cichlid tank 3-4 weeks ago but now I want some discus!
waaaaaaaaaaahh
Kind of expensive though... 90-gal tank, RO filter, $40-$60 per
fish. <sigh>

Putting a Discus (or Angel) in a 30 gallon tank would be cruel. Although
they hover allot, they also like to swim too, and a 30 gallon just is
not long enough.
The 90 would be a very good choice, a 55 would be allot cheaper and be
good enough.
Amazon sword plant are usually cheap and the discus love swimming thru
and hiding in them. And the tetras will need a hiding place too.
RO units can be cheaper in the Warehouse home improvement stores, Home
Depot, Lowes etc.
I got my 1 inch Discus for $8 apiece from a local breeder, they were the
more common Blue Turquoise, pretty fish. The Orange Sunset he sold for
$75USD, they had no strips/bars at all, a single bright red spot in the
center of their side that faded to florescent orange at the fins,
unbelievably beautiful. The breeding male was about 8 inches SL, with
devilish red eyes that you could feel slice right thru you when he
stared you down, an amazing fish.

Oh, don't worry... I wouldn't put such majestic creatures in my 30
gallon. I'd get a tank that's appropriate for their lifestyle. --
someday I'll have money to do that but not these days.

What is best for discus? Do they like a tank that is tall or a tank
that is long?

So many fish so little time, I can be a very bad person to listen to ;~)
I'm starting up a marine tank as soon as I get bored with freshwater.
I've only been at freshwater about 30 years, so another 20 years should
be enough ;~).
