i have recently bought a hoplarchus psittacus (parrot cichlid) and have had
conflicting advice in whether it can be aggressive or not, it is currently
in a tank alone but i want to hopefully put it in with my synspilum, there
are only a few fs in cornwall and a few have never even heard of this fish
so have been unable to help.

i have a blood parrot, and he is not very aggressive, and does not
chase my fish, but that might be because all my fish are pretty fast.

thanks but my parrot is very different to a blood parrot, a blood parrot is
a hybrid of fairly peaceful fish where mine is a wild caught cichlid, i know
its quite rare so its hard to find much info on them.

If you do a web search you will find many references to Hoplarchus
psittacus.

Try http://www.fishbase.org/Summary/SpeciesSummary.cfm?id=47066

It is often confused with those gross hybrids called parrots. Some web
sites have it listed as a Malawi cichlid - they are wrong. Hoplarchus
psittacus was classified as an Aequidens.

Aggressive or territorial?? I find the cichlids to be territorial as opposed
to aggressive.. Yes, these guys have an attitude. I recently seen some at an
LFS here and those ones seemed to have the attitude of a the Flower Horn.
They flared their gills plates for me as I walked past the tank. So I would
suspect your F1 is not going to be much different. The New World cichlids I
always feel, have the nastiest attitudes and are exceptionally territorial.

I think what you should do is try putting the fish together in the
same tank and watch them and see how it goes. You want to do this on a
day when you're going to be at home all day long, obviously.

thanks, territorial i can cope with cause its going in a tank where i can
move things around to change the set territories the synspilum have set. oh
well all i can do is try it in with them and if i have any problems i can
move it back to being alone.

I think the cichlids are territorial, rather than to actively .. yes, these guys have an attitude. I recently saw some in a labour Force Survey of the attitude here seems to be A, Flower Horn. They broke out the gill plate to me, I walk past the tank. Therefore, F1 will not doubt you are very different.
