View Full Version : Climbing Corys

I'm frequently amazed at the behaviour of my fish. Everthing I've read
says corys hate to leave the bottom. In fact, when they go to the
surface for air, they dart up and back as quick as possible because they
only feel safe on the bottom.

So yesterday I was perturbed when I found my largest cory about 6" off
the bottom laying on the branch of a water sprite plant. I checked to
see if it was alive, and it was. This morning it was still there, but
as I looked it swam off and back to the bottom. This afternoon I looked
again, and TWO of them were sitting in the "tree".

I thought climbing catfish were a different species :-).

When they were in the tank by themselves, my corys would routinely leave
the bottom. I've seen them climbing the walls of the tank, swimming
mid-water, even swiming upside down underneath the leaves of my anubias.
I've recently added some additional fish to the tank, so I don't know
if they'll keep doing it if there are other fish running around.

I have a nearly species only cory tank - the only other fish in there is a
male betta. The cories routinly swim all over the tank, at all levels.
They'll leisurly swim up the side of the tank, looking for goodies. The
cories in my 60 gallon with a few mild-mannered cichlids aren't nearly as
laid back.

All my little Corys stay at the bottom.... The adults swim around
freely, sometimes 6-8" off the bottom. During spawning the couple
climbed the walls, plants and even swam near the surface.

I read too, that frequent "darts" to the surface for air is an
indication of spawning. I didn't notice a difference, but maybe it's
true.
