View Full Version : Anemone and Decorator Crab

Hello gang,
I have a question about compatibility. I bought a feather duster recently
and put it in my reef tank. I already had a decorator crab in that tank.
Within 2 days the decorator crab was looking pretty in his new feather
outfit. I took the decorator out of that tank and waited to see if the
duster would live through the experience. No such luck. So I removed the
feather duster corpse . About two days ago I bought my first Anemone (a
bubble tip). My paired Yellow Striped Maroons love it. What I'm wanting to
know is if I put the Decorator Crab back in the reef will he try to put on a
bubble tip outfit or try to eat the bubble tip. I really like the crab and
would like to put him back in the reef but I don't want to loose the
Anemone. Any help anyone could offer would be most appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Ed,
What is the size of the decorator crab and what is the size of the BTA? If the
BTA is larger, I have a hard time believeing the crab could successfully unmount
a BTA from the crevices in rockwork.

Howdy Marc,
The decorator and the BTA are about the same size (around 4-5 inches
around). The DC didn't get the featherduster tube loose either. He just
ripped off the entire feather crown and plucked a few feathers for his own
use. All this happened in the middle of the night. I know he is a night
time feeder so I'm not sure if it's worth the trial atleast not till a time
when I have a couple days to stay up and monitor. Would a Yellow tailed
blue Damsel be ok in that tank? (With the paired Yellow Striped Maroon
Clowns)?

with the YSM clowns a yellow tailed damsel would be about an even match on
agressivness IMO. would be just a matter of who is most persistant on who's
the boss of the tank.

all the way up until the female ysm lays eggs, then if the damsel doesnt have a place to
hide its damsel dinner :)

That kinda surprises me. The one I have is in with 2 percula clowns now in
a different tank and he seems to be the most gentle of the group. But you
guys know way more than I do as I am fairly new to all this so I think I'll
keep them apart. Not looking to have my "kids" fighting...:-)
