Can I use compact Fluorescent Bulbs?
Can I use the below kind of Compact fluorescent bulbs for a mini-reef
(mostly LRWF and some easy corals like Mushrooms). It is a ton cheaper to
buy these bulbs and create a hood with say 6 of them, than to buy an
aquarium made hood.

you can use them but they more then likely are of a red spectrum of light
coloration (warm white) and will cause unwanted algae growth. im not sure
what LRWF is.........maybe FOWLR (fish only with live rock)???????????

shrooms will live under pretty much any light and thrive IME. i frag them
in the sump/fuge of my 180 with just standerd "twister" screw in flourscent
lights at 32w.

Your links don't work, but this is the one I use over my refugium. How mini is
your mini reef? It might take 4 of them to do a small tank justice, imho.

These cost $7 each, btw. They are the "daylight" bulb.

Thanks Marc. I love your site. My mini reef will be around 40G. I guess
I thought mini-reef meant not a true reef. Like I said its mostly FOWLR and
some shrooms. Making a hood based on your DIY six of these. Could that
work?

When it comes to a FO tank you can go easier on the lighting
requirements. After all fish don't photosynthesize. And as long as you are
not growing unwanted algae you should be okay.
As far as the shrooms go, they should be okay. Mushrooms are tough to kill,
they require very little (to no) care.
If you ever think you might want to turn your tank into a reef one day -
spend the money on a good lighting system now to avoid making a second
lighting purchase later. Something to consider.

If you told me it was for a 7g nano reef, I'd say yes. A 40g??? Hmmmm..

Why don't you try it out and let us know how that works for you? I'd say that
all your light will be at the top of the tank with those, and that the intensity
(PAR) will be quickly diminished within a few inches. The base of your tank
will look okay to you, but I bet corals will really stretch to get some light.
(mushrooms and zoanthids).
