I would like to thank everyone who has given me good advice over the
last three months. I started out with a spare 20g tank and have
upgraded to my 55g. My fresh water fish were not happy loosing their
tank to the salt water fish but have forgiven me LOL. I keep reading
everything I can either get my hands on or see on line and it is all so
fascinating. My diatom (brown) algae is gone now and in its place I
have nice short green and coralline algae which my coral beauty and
turbo snails eat. I do not plan on growing any corals at this time, but
who knows what the future may hold.

Again, thank you for all the input.

Vicki

By the way I found out what anemone I picked up with those barnacles and
had no problem disposing of them. I am glad I put them in the 10g
instead of the 55g tho as it would have been next to imposable to pick
them out of all my live rock. I am not sure of the spelling but you all
know what I am talking about, starts with an A.

Are you talking about Aptasia? You should quarantine new live rock additions
for a few weeks & inspect it while in quarantine to catch these problems
before they are added to your main tank.

Yes that is the stuff I am talking about, Aptasia. I do have a
quarantine tank that I use. It is a 10g tank with just a little crushed
coral a filter and the three damsels I bought when I first set up my
tank. I change 20% of the water every week and my little damsels are
doing great. Everyone told me to get rid of them but I just could not
allow some one else to use them to cycle a tank and then throw them out.
I got the Aptasia on a couple of barnacles I saved from one of the "New"
salt water lakes created by Isabel and I didn't want them to die once
the lake dried up. When I got my little treasures home I put them in
the 10g tank and then noticed the little brown things on it. But them
things are tough, they were still alive even after spending the nite in
a dry bowl. I can just imagine how hard it would have been to get rid
of them had I stuck them in my 55. But even saying that I could not
kill them so they are going to live out the rest of their lives in a
little bowl.

this is a FO tank, not a QT tank.

a qt setup IMO would not have substrate in it either, this is a place for
parasites to live. a bare bottom tank with circulation and heater are all
you need. frequent water changes from the display tank to keep water
quality in check. no fish to stress the qt'd fish and cause a disease.
