I try and read every post in here and I see a lot on additives for
corals. So my question is, are the same chemicals in the salt water
mix? Would weekly water changes do the same thing as adding the
chemicals to the water? I am just curious.

all the good ones are "in" the salt mixes, often times its the ammount, and faster
consumption thats an issue, take calcium for an example many ppl have corals that consume
calcium, doing a waterchange just to add calcium is somewhat wastefull and a whole lot of
work, and on top of that depending on which salt mix you get they dont really come with
enough calcium to begin with.

I agree with Richard, the only think I add for the most part is calcium
buffer. I add iodine when I frag a lot of softies but its most likely not
needed as my levels stay in acceptable ranges anyway. but with sps and big
clams especially, calcium drops quickly if not supplemented.

Thank you both for answering my question. I am one of them water
changing fanatics tho and I was wondering about trying a few soft corals
in my 10g tank which gets 20% weekly water changes. The fella who runs
the aquatic department at my LFS breeds corals and is willing to give me
a few free pieces. This is the one question that I did not really go in
to with him because he is one of them "Weiss" followers and I want to
stay away from those products.

free, and free is always good :)
