View Full Version : aiptasia

Hello Again,

Have a quick question. On a new piece of live rock I have what may be
Aiptasia. I will remove it if indeed it is. From the photos I can find it is
similar in appearance, but when touch it can totally retract into the rock.
Is this a common trait of Aiptasia? Being a anemone I thought this behavior
was a bit strange.

The two of them were on a very small piece of live rock I was cycling in a
tub in my garage. I removed the rock and placed it in a small amoumt of RO
water (no salt, cold). How long should I let the rock sit in there until
aiptasia is dead?

O.K. Cap, I'm typing this really slow so you can grasp it................

ready............

the viniger is injected into the aptasia, not added directly to the tank.
if you inject a couple thousand in a tank (even a QT) the ph WILL drop.
this WILL kill things living in the tank as well as on/in the live rock.

no need for water changes, just dont put 50ml of viniger in a 10 gallon.
a little now and then will disipate and no ill effects.

the hot water trick i honestly cant see rising your tank temp any
significiant amount regardless of how many you inject. a cup will inject
many hundred of the little *&%$#'s.

did i type that slow enough?

:)

till later Cap.

putting LR in RO water with no salt for a length of time = dead rock

dont do that, do the injection method.

if you have allready kept the rock in the fresh water for any length of time
the life on and in it are most likely dead, sorry.

Another jerk hiding behind a keyboard. Was that really necessary? He
misunderstood. Rule #1 for USENET posting in my book: If you wouldn't say it
to a guy standing in front of you holding an aluminum baseball bat, you
probably shouldn't post it.

Hey! I wasn't issued a aluminum baseball bat! Are those standard
equipment where you come from? j/k

DS and Cap are well known around here, DS didnt break any rules and Cap should know it :)

you can search the archives of this group you will see both DS, and Cap have been here a
while.

so before name calling just make sure you know who your calling what.

plus it wouldnt have been a aluminum base ball bat it would have been a foam one :)

The rock was a very small one. Was not concerned with die-off except to get
rid of unwanteds. Hey I didn't mean to get everyone all excited and
everything.

Depending on what you want to kill. If the LR only have Aiptasia and nothing
else, then you can use that method of using only RO water w/o those mix.
BUT, if there is a shrimp or hitchhiker that you want to keep, then you will
have to target the critter or specific thing you want to kill. Putting the
whole LR in RO (fresh water w/o mix) will eventually make your LR => DR
(Dead Rock). LR = living critter that occupy on, around and in your the
cavest / spore of the rock.

Sorry Dragon Slayer, I guess it just flew by.

From previous message:

Lowering PH or raising HIGH temperature should not matter if it is being
done in a "Holding Tank" or somehting. If you have other critter in there
together, then that is another story.

Do you notice the last sentence?

Then you will need to specific target it to avoid killing those you do want.
During this battle, do some water changes.

Do you notices the first sentence? The second sentence is just a precaution
by using doing water changes. Any hitchhiker or critter that occupy the LR,
may or may not survive with those stress condition by using vingar or any
changes.

Please read above first quote. If just the ROCK just have Aiptasia only and
thing else, then yes. But if there are some critter that you do not want to
kill, then of course you do not mass kill everything with vinigar.

50ml in 10G, maybe. Depend on what you have with the LR. I would try to cure
the LR while trying to kill Aiptasia (in this case).

You do not want to cause other critter stress except for those you want to
get rid of.

Hot water treatment for Aiptasia, it may or may not work.

It is ok billy, it just only opinion. Any opinion that post here will get
corrected if there a problem or such. Everyone have different experience in
this hobby. There no one way or standard and or guideline to base on.
Newbies and lurker will need to try it and see if that solution will fit
their situation. Certain method or certain way of doing will work for some
but not for all.

This NG and other NG are just information that are share by other.

not a problem, if the new guy would have left well enough
alone..............Cap is a pretty sharp guy for a squire and we have been
poking back and forth for quite a while on this NG this is the first time
its been taken so harshly.

Apology is unnecessary. I would ruffle your feather if I see something
wrong.
I am just trying to get it straight, just in-case a lurker or newbie read it
and get confuse.

I've only done it twice but it worked.

Use a syringe and needle like for insulin injections. Inject about
1cc of lemon juice right into it. Both of mine went away and never
returned.

1cc won't hurt a thing.
