View Full Version : Yoyo Loach not himself

My Yoyo Loach (Slinky) does not seem up to par. He seems to be hiding out a
lot more (wedging himself into tight spaces) and looks a bit pale. Last
night I found him between the heater and the glass. Tonight I couldn't find
him at all, even though I moved everything. I finally found him after the
second tear down, wedged inside a crevice on the underside of the Pagoda.

I realise his symptoms are a little vague, but any thoughts?

Loss of color (if not age related) could be some type of stress. Check
your NH3/4, NO2, NO3, pH and gH. If the water is very warm, the O2
levels drop, and it seems to affect bottom dwellers more than others who
just move closer to the surface. Others might suggest adding more Yoyos,
though it would depend on your setup and I hate to add fish when
something is suspect. jmo

Thanks Max,

I did not see him again today, so I was beginning to worry. But he came out
after the first set of lights went out. So perhaps he's just adopting a more
nocturnal schedule. I had removed several handfuls of Hornwort, so I was
concerned that the Nitrates had spiked, but they tested between 1 and 2
tonight. I had also increased the CO2 to about 15 ppm from 9 and changed the
delivery method (RUGF powerhead) , but I don't think that's a factor (PH 7
vs. 7.2).

Do Yoyos like to sleep in the same spot/cave? maybe he's just found a
sleeping spot he likes.

None of the Botia are very predictable, especially when they are alone
(they tend towards group behaviour, when there is more than 2 or 3).
Removal of a lot of Hornwort might have increased the light levels and
his feeling of vulnerability, so he is hiding more during the daylight
hours.

I have a lot of Clown Loaches in 3 tanks. There are 2 in a 10 gallon
tank. I mention them because their behaviour is so different. They
do stay together when both are visible, but one is shy and stays most
often in a "mill house" ornament. The other one also uses the mill
house, but is equally out and about.

I pull the ornament about every 6 months to clean the algae off. I
can expect to not see the shy Clown for several days afterward,
whereas the more socialble Clown hides only the first day.

I have only had one sick clown. He was a runt, but I had managed to
get him in a tank he liked, a 10 gallon hospital tank, but moved him
to another 10 gal to clean up the snails. He made a cave right off
and was not visible often. He did a good job on the snails, but was
out of sight, so I put him back (in my mind it was a "him") into the
hospital tank where he was obviously happy. Unfortunately I move him
once more to the snail infested tank where he died. He didn't seem
interested in the snails this time. I blame myself for "using" him
rather than accepting his obvious tank of choice.

I hope your clown is just a recluse.
