I was looking at two power compact products for my 30 gallon tank:
1. Custom Sea Life 2 x 96W 36" Hood w/fan $409.99
or
2. Coralife 2 x 96W 36" Hood w/fan $209.99
What gives with the price difference? The Coralife is a new product. I wonder
if thay are finally putting out a light that is reasonably priced?
Any thoughts, ideas, or warnings.

The first one seems very overpriced to me, but maybe it looks simply awesome.
You can get retro kits for $199, with 4 55w PC bulbs and dual ballasts from
HelloLights.com (if they've not changed their prices recently). However, that
doesn't include a nice canopy. 55w bulbs are 22" long, but my 29g is only 30"
wide. Even if you went with this option, you could stagger the bulbs to give you
good coverage.

I'm not sure what the differences are other than price but am sure someone
here could tell us. I would suggest, based upon my own frustrating
experience, that you make sure to get the square-pin design. They are much
more plentiful and a little cheaper. Also can be hard to find 96W
straight-pin in certain colors.
Personally I would also recomend using a canopy and retro-kit. Looks WAY
better, may keep tank a little quieter, also light is a little cheaper. If
you could provide more info it would be helpful to give advise.... where did
you find them?

I can say one thing for sure. I know for a fact that if you have problems
with your custom sea life product
you will get great customer support. They are outstanding and will stand
behind their product. I would
recommend custom sea life for that reason alone.

Customer service isn't worth $200 in most cases.. just my opinion. I've not
tried either of those lights but have never felt Coralife was a sleazy
company.. I use their NO bulbs over all my tanks, marine and fresh. I plan
on giving them a try on this new light set-up for my 55 marine some time
soon. It would make a nice little christmas present.. hubby's already been
finding the info on his desk, lol.

I have a coralife aqualight (2x65W PC straight pin base) over a 29gal.
tank. Dual cords and switches, fans built into the hood, nice
construction. The fans started to make a bit of noise, but coralife
has responded quickly and shipped out free replacements. nice product
and nice support. I'd order coralife again--particularly at half the
price.

Maybe this is besides the point and I have no idea what it indicates,
but I had an impossible job trying to photograph the tank with a Custom
Sea Life 65. The blue was off the scale and required big correction
into red with my Olympus 4000 digital. When I switched to Coralife, the
colors were accurate. Although both are 65s and 50/50, clearly there is
a significant difference.
