I'm not an expert, but you may want to try using carbon in your filter.

Replace 20 to 50 percent of your water with dechlorinated tap water,
once a week. This is usually done as part of the aquarium cleaning, and
it's known as a "partial water change".

Are you sure there isn't a dead fish or snail somewhere in the tank?
Dead snails are particularly stinky.

Google "new tank syndrome" and "aquarium cycling" or "aquarium cycling".
Or go to http://www.bestfish.com/breakin.html and http://www.thekrib.com/ .

Nah. Disturbing a healthy filter should only release what I perceive as
a mild pondwater smell. I've never found it offensive and certainly not
like "poo." Tanks where the gravel isn't planted or cleaned can have
patches of anaerobic gravel with bacteria that make a rotten egg smell
(H2S) when disturbed. That calls for an immediate, thorough gravel
cleaning because H2S makes the fish in the tank sick. However, your
tank isn't old enough for that.

I had another thought - blue green algae can make a tank smell really
funky. Siphon any green, slimy looking algae off of wherever it's growing.

Finally, I sometimes find that FW tanks in the nitrite part of the cycle
can smell really "fishy" while nitrites are high. If that's it, you'll
just have to wait it out.
