View Full Version : Sick platty

July 26th 05, 02:51 PM
Hi,

Can someone take a look at the sick fish album at
http://photos.yahoo.com/hammerjoe and tell me what disease this fish
has and how I can treat it?

The fish acts normally, eats and looks otherwise fine, it's just those
two red spots(sores?) that worries me.

Thx

I took a look at your pictures joe and to be honest I couldn't find those 2
red spots unless your are talking about the reddening of the top fin and
vent. What I would recommend is to listen to others at this newsgroup and to
wait and see if the red spots get worse. I wouldn't recommend medicating yet
as it isn't a necessary risk at this point. I am sure you are fully aware
that some medications destroy the biological filter while others kill
invertebrates (snails, plants, etc.) and still others kill some fish (i.e.
scaleless fish from ich/ick) so don't just dump medicine into the tank,
measure your actions. I have been where you are before and I dumped the
medicine in (a long time ago) and really messed up bad losing fish from
improper use of medication, so be careful. It's too easy just to dump
medicine in and it is not necessarily worth it at least not yet. Your platy
might be constipated (thus the red of the vent) (and hence the long string
of feces hanging out of it - I know, it just happens sometimes, there is
nothing to be ashamed about unless you are neglecting to feed the fish
properly and I doubt you don't feed properly) but that's about all I can
figure from your pictures. Your pictures are great too - certainly nothing
lacking there. Good luck and be careful! Later!

I'm no expert on diseases, but I would have that fish quarantined and on
a diet of antibiotic medicated foods. The affected area looks fairly far
advanced and the fish is a little thin, but otherwise looks not bad (ie:
fins, other colors, eyes, buoyancy & orientation).

...though I suspect it will fall under some internal bacterial disease,
best treated with medicated foods - but I claim no expertise in this
area, so ymmv

The pics do not show really the bad spots clearly.
The fish does not like to show that side and it's very hard to get a
good picture.

The fish is my hospital tank and I am just using melafix.

I will see if I can get a more clear picture.

I found the photos more than adequate. There is a bilateral patch of
affected skin underneath the scales, above the anal fin just behind the
gravid area. jmo

Well it died last night.

I wonder what kin dof disease this is.

It was missing skin and flesh in the affected areas like it rotted and
just fell off.

I feel sad for the fish, it looked okay otherwise last night.

Sorry to hear that joe, I have no clue as to what disease it was even after
checking my old exotic aquarium fishes book, no mention of any kind of flesh
rotting away disease, just fin rot was in the book as far as what the
closest disease it could be. Next time this happens (I hope there is no next
time) feed the fish medicated fish food - that might actually work. Better
fortune for you in the future, later!

Probably a bacterial infection. I couldn't see much detail in your
pictures. Sorry she died.
