View Full Version : RODI water and conditioners

I'd like to use RODI water in my tanks when I set them up again (I have to
have it anyway for the marine tank I'm setting up), but I'm not sure how I'd
condition the water...buffering, etc. Does anyone know what I need, or
better yet, done it?

Thanks,
Tim

One of the least expensive and easiest to get spares for is one of the units
sold at Home Depot, or Lowes. If you require higher capacity then check
with your LFS or some of the online sites.

Thanks John. Since you confirmed it's possible to use RODI water for a
freshwater tank, what products are recommended to condition the water to the
appropriate hardness, buffering, etc?

RODI water will be very soft and as you know, have nearly no buffering
capacity. You had mentioned that you will also have a marine tank.
Consider using a small amount of your marine substrate in the freshwater
tanks. Most marine substrates will dissolve in low pH and naturally buffer
the water. By only having a small portion in the freshwater tanks, it won't
raise the pH or hardness too high.

Hmm...that's a thought.

I've used Kent RO Right. It worked nicely.

Great! Thank you all SO much for the help. I fought (and lost) the water
quality battle a number of years ago...trying to make tap water do what I
wanted it to do, with no cooperation on its part. The water up here is
horrible in many ways from an aquarist' point of view. I didn't want to
repeat that battle, but I didn't want to have to settle, either.

Many Thanks,
Tim
